SNS, Baowu explore low-carbon DRI and green steel project

Algeria’s National Iron and Steel Company (SNS) and China’s Baowu Group are exploring a strategic partnership to establish an integrated complex for the production of low-carbon direct reduced iron (DRI) and green steel in Algeria, according to the local media reports.

The project was discussed during a meeting between Algeria’s Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines Mohamed Arkab and a Baowu delegation in Algiers, with talks focusing on industrial cooperation, technology transfer and the development of lower-carbon steel production.

The proposed complex would combine Algeria’s natural gas and renewable energy resources with Baowu’s steelmaking and decarbonization technologies. The discussions also covered emissions reduction and carbon capture solutions, as well as potential cooperation with Sonatrach on energy and raw material supplies.

Baowu expressed readiness to transfer its technology and expertise to support the development of Algeria’s low-carbon steel industry and improve the competitiveness of locally produced steel.
