CSC holds flat steel prices for May

China Steel Corp (CSC), Taiwan’s largest steelmaker, announced it will keep domestic flat steel prices unchanged for May 2025.

The decision follows similar moves by China’s Baowu Steel, which is maintaining prices for HR and CR steel products. Meanwhile, Vietnam’s Formosa Ha Tinh Steel raised HR prices by USD 3-5 per ton, CSC said in a statement.

Last month, ArcelorMittal, Europe’s top steelmaker, raised HRC prices by USD 22 per ton, citing persistently high iron ore and coking coal costs.

Given market uncertainty surrounding the new US tariffs and their potential impact on downstream industries, CSC is holding prices steady to help stabilize sentiment, the company said.

The US recently imposed a 25pct tariff on steel imports under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, pushing domestic HRC prices above USD 1,000 per ton, CSC noted. With the full impact of the US policy still unclear and downstream users cautious, CSC said it will closely monitor developments and continue offering support measures to help customers secure orders and remain competitive.
